But soon you’ll find that there comes a time … For making your mind up.

How heavily do you find making decisions weights on your mind? Do you find when you have a choice to make it keeps you up at night or makes you feel worried? This week we’ll listen to the wisdom of Bucks Fizz and their classic hit Making Your Mind Up.

People have a variety of techniques for making decisions. But it is often not so much the method we use, but the time we take, which creates problems for our wellbeing. We frequently put off making decisions waiting to find out more. In itself, this is not a bad thing, but how much information is enough for us to make a choice?

CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bazos, has said it is the speed of decision making which often defines success and that we are frequently better off making a decision with 70% of the information we’d like rather than waiting for 90% of the information to become available. As Buck’s Fizz say;

“… soon you’ll find that there comes a time, for making your mind up.”

So what causes this delay and what impact does it have on our wellbeing? In many respects delaying may seem logical. This brings us back to Bucks Fizz:

“Don’t let your indecision, take you from behind. Trust your inner vision. Don’t let others change your mind.”

Often, our waiting is informed by fear and self-doubt. In most cases we will never have all the information we would like to make a wholly informed decision as we don’t know what the future holds. The important thing is to make a decision with enough information, which fits with our vision and values. This is something we often focus on in life coaching sessions. This brings us back to Bucks Fizz;

“…when you can see how it’s gotta be … You’re making your mind up”.

Knowing every piece of information we might want, and everything the future might hold, isn’t something we need to worry about. What is important for our well-being is that we know how we want things to be. That’s making our mind up.
