The power of love (part 2 of 3)

So, in part one of The Power of Love, we thought of how love is sacrificial and therefore costly, brining us nicely to the lyrics of Huey Lewis and the News: ‘Don’t take money, don’t take fame. Don’t need no credit card to ride this train.’

In a consumerist world where costliness if often reflected and responded to with money, perhaps even attempting to buy the love of another, today’s song offers us a different idea.

Love isn’t something we can just give a nod to and then buy, it requires us to change. ‘More than a feeling, that’s the power of love … Power of love will keep you home at night.’ Beyond just a feeling, when we love it changes our behaviour; how and who we spend our time with, what we do, how we live our lives.

But this isn’t just about our most intimate relationships. This is the choice to live a life of love in all spheres of our existence. When we make a commitment to this, we discover a new way of living, and one that will demonstrate: That’s the power that makes the world go round.

It’s also not just about living a life which is soft and fluffy. The song reflects that whilst love may sometimes have a gentle nature which is easy to mould, it also requires a toughness to cut through some of the tough situations we face in life: Tougher than diamonds, whips like cream. Only then can it truly be a world changing love.

This is a love which goes beyond our feelings to a commitment to living a life of sacrifice, and a life which makes us vulnerable. We need to be prepared to give ourselves if we are to truly change the world with love. But the joy in this is that: You won’t feel it until you feel. The more we learn to love, the more we will experience a life of love.
