Love, love changes everything

When you hear a song like Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Changes Everything do you think of it as a sentimental romantic notion, or do you think of it as something more?
There’s no doubt that it has a romantic context in its original setting, the musical Aspects of Love, as indicated by the lyrics:
Yes, love, love changes everything. Now I tremble at your name.
But beyond the idea of romance, love also has a far more profound on our being as people:
Love, love changes everything. How you live and how you die.
In a BBC News article, interventional cardiologist Professor Vijay Kunadian of the University of Newcastle has argued that experiencing love doesn’t just make us feel good emotionally, but is also physically good for the heart.
Professor’s Hallowell and Ratey, psychiatrists whose specialism is ADHD, discuss the idea of metabolising, or receiving love and taking it in and allowing it to transform us. They argue that love can help heal past trauma which can create transformative relationships for people as they move forward. Indeed, they argue that the power of love to transform our physical health should be taken just as seriously as a healthy diet and exercise.
So, whilst Love Changes Everything may be a ballad of romantic love, it certainly hints that love can transform us; how we live and how we die. And in this respect, the research agrees, learning to live in love is far more than a fairytale, it’s a foundation for a good life.
