Every day for us something new. How true, but how challenging, is this lyric from the Metallica ballad Nothing Else Matters? Yes, every day we experience has the potential to be the start of something new, but it’s hard to live life like this as we so often hold on to the hurt of the past, or our fear of the future. The alternative? Open mind for a different view.
The song is a fantastic exploration of what this different might look like; be ourselves, live like ourselves and be less concerned with the agenda of others.
Couldn’t be much more from the heart. Forever trust in who we are.
It’s important we know ourselves and what we stand for. What is important to us? How have we formed who we are? What are the experiences, relationships, hopes and fears, which help us to understand life? Taking a heart focused life audit can help us know what to take with us and what to leave behind as we start each day new.
Never opened myself this way. Life is ours; we live it our way. All these words, I don’t just say.
To live like ourselves requires a vulnerability. We can’t just think about who we are and what we want to be and do. We need to live it. To do it. This takes openness and vulnerability as it puts us at risk of the criticism of others. Yet this doesn’t mean being self-centred or non-relational; Trust I seek, and I find in you. It simply means we are to be prepared and less invested in what others want us to be.
Never cared for what they do … know … say … for games they play.
Other people will judge you with their own agenda and issues. We should expect it as, realistically, it’s something we also do to others; no matter how non-judgemental we try to be. The important thing for us is not to attach undue weight to what others do. Take it on board. Consider it. Yes. Others see things about us which are true and which we don’t see. But we need to weigh it for ourselves and not accept it uncritically.
When we start to have this healthier view of others, and a commitment to having more integrity with ourselves, we have a good foundation to experience every day for us [as] something new.
