I mean, I don’t see what she sees.

Bad Guy by Billie Eilish

So, I was watching TV the other day and I heard a familiar bass line. It’s the one from the BT Broadband advert and from a song called Bad Guy by Billie Eilish. Straight away I was taken back to last summer and a gorgeous hot day at the Greenbelt festival. I was wandering into a tent to see a comedian who was about to perform.

I find it amazing how music, like smell, can overwhelm our thinking and transport us to another place so instantaneously. I thought, I know, I might write something about that this week, the power of using our senses to improve our state of mind and wellbeing.

Then, it dawned on me. All I really remembered about the song was the bass line. I thought I’d check out the rest of it. As it turned out, there were lyrics. I didn’t remember that. Reading through, they didn’t say what I expected at all! But then I came across this:

I mean, I don’t see what she sees.

It pretty much sums it up. When I hear the song, I don’t hear anything about the facts of the topic being explore by Eilish. Instead, I’m transported to a pleasant summer memory, my applied truth from the song.

Perhaps the point after all. Life is so influenced by memory and perspective. Yet, where our current perspective arises from can be changed. And sometimes, it just takes our senses to be deluged for us to be shifted in mood and perspective.

So, this week, I give it to you folk, the power of music for our wellbeing. Never let the plain facts get in the way of the applied truth.
