Welcome to 2021! So, we still have lockdowns and all that goes with it, but it is a new year and with that perhaps you are thinking that you might Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, which is the title of this week’s track by Michael Jackson.

It’s traditionally the time we start new things. My new challenge is to try to learn a few words of Spanish for our planned summer holiday. So, with Duolingo downloaded onto my phone it’s now a matter of being committed to practice. All good so far, but you know that sooner or later something will get in the way. And that’s when the real challenge of adopting new habits starts:

It’s too high to get over. Too low to get under. You’re stuck in the middle. And the pain is thunder.

It’s interesting how we always see other people’s obstacles, problems, or barriers as easier to navigate than our own:

I took my baby to the doctor. With a fever, but nothin’ he found.

It’s also interesting how we often don’t see our own challenges as just part of life, common to all, but as more typical of the challenges we face distinct from other people who we think have it easy:

Someone’s always tryin’. To start my baby cryin’. Talkin’, squealin’, lyin’

So, if like me you’re trying to be starting something (new) this January how is it best to make progress? Here’s my three top tips:

  • Small changes – Whether it’s learning, exercise, or dieting, making small changes is the most sustainable option. One of my favourite coaching questions is, ‘what is the smallest thing I can do which will make a difference?’.
  • Consistency – The great thing about small changes is that they are easier to maintain and become a habit. Slow and steady is the key!
  • Accountability – Getting the help of others always helps. Just letting someone know your plan, and then keeping them updated on your progress helps us to maintain motivation. It’s something which many phone app’s have built in with streaks and reminders.

But, most of all, believe in yourself. You are the only person who can change your life, and what’s more, you have all you need to do it:

Lift your head up high and scream out to the world. I know I am someone. And let the truth unfurl. No one can hurt you now because you know what’s true. Yes, I believe in me. So, you believe in you. Help me sing it!
