It has no redeeming features, and we’re really proud of that
Another Boring B-Side by Morris Minor and the Majors
I’m doing lots of DIY at the moment. I actually quite like doing DIY. It makes a nice change to be doing work with my hands and not just my head. But if there’s one thing I’ve had to learn to make my enjoyment of DIY possible, it’s been not to be a perfectionist. Knowing when is ‘good enough’ makes all the difference.
It’s this sentiment of not having to make everything perfect that inspires this week’s song choice Another Boring B-Side by Morris Minor and the Majors. As its title suggests, it’s actually the B-side (remember those!) to the single Stutter Rap released in 1988. And the song celebrates, well, in its own words:
Well, now’s the time that you’ll be made aware, that we didn’t spend much time on this. We didn’t think you’d mind … It’s another boring B-side. Another load of tatt … You’re listening to the product of considerable neglect …
I think it’s a great perspective! It’s part not just doing something because it’s just what people expect, playing with our expectations in a joyful light-hearted way. And it’s also part saying everything I do doesn’t need to have to be perfect.
One of the things that strikes me from my coaching conversations with people over the years is just how much these concepts are not really understood by us as humans. We don’t have to do everything perfectly. We don’t need to do things just because someone somewhere might expect it. We can just have fun and enjoy!
It’s not that we shouldn’t do things to the best of our ability. In fact, the A-Side to this tune Stutter Rap is itself a comedic testament to doing your best without having to be perfect. It’s just that for our own wellbeing, it’s just as important to know when something doesn’t require our best effort. When we can look at something we’ve done and declare:
It has no redeeming features, and we’re really proud of that.
